When the Phone Rings: A Guide to the Netflix Korean Romance-Thriller

A guide to When the Phone Rings, the Netflix K-drama about a spokesman, his silent wife, and a kidnapper's call: cast, where to watch, and locations.

πŸ“… Year2024

Here is the hook that powers the whole show: a married couple who barely speak to each other are forced to communicate through a kidnapper. When the Phone Rings (μ§€κΈˆ κ±°μ‹  μ „ν™”λŠ”) opens on a marriage that is, by mutual agreement, a marriage in name only. Baek Sa-eon is a presidential spokesman who married for arrangement, not affection; his wife Hong Hee-joo does not speak, and after three years the two have settled into a polite, frozen distance. Then the phone rings, a stranger says he has her, and the careful silence between them detonates into something neither can control.

The premise

Adapted from a Kakao Page web novel of the same name, this is a romance built on the bones of a thriller. The kidnapper’s threats are the engine, but the real plot is the slow reveal of who these two people actually are behind the public image and the imposed quiet. Secrets that the marriage was designed to keep buried start surfacing, and the more danger closes in, the more the spouses are forced to drop the act and look at each other.

It is a melodrama that takes its suspense seriously. The tone swings between political-thriller tension and aching two-hander romance, and the show is at its best when those two registers collide in a single scene. Twelve episodes, no filler, and it does not coast on the premise.

Where to watch

It first aired on MBC TV in South Korea from late November 2024 into early January 2025. Internationally it streams on Netflix, which carries an official title page for it.

  • Netflix β€” available in select regions worldwide (availability is region-dependent, so check your country’s catalog).
  • South Korea β€” originally broadcast on MBC TV.

There is no confirmed Disney+ release, so Netflix is the place to look.

Yoo Yeon-seok plays Baek Sa-eon, the spokesman whose composed public face hides a much messier interior. It is a role that asks him to be controlled and unreadable for long stretches and then crack, and the performance lives in those cracks.

Chae Soo-bin plays Hong Hee-joo, the wife who does not speak. It is the harder assignment of the two leads: carry an emotional arc, and a fair amount of the suspense, almost entirely without dialogue. She does a lot with stillness, sign, and expression, and the show leans on her to make the silence feel like a person rather than a gimmick.

Around them, Heo Nam-jun appears as Ji Sang-woo and Jang Gyu-ri as Na Yu-ri, both feeding into the web of past connections that the kidnapping starts pulling loose.

Filming locations

One honest caveat up front: the production did not publish an official location list, so the specific spots below come from Korean location-tracking blogs rather than the studio. Treat them as reported-but-unconfirmed.

The one most worth flagging for K-drama travelers is Dankook University’s Jukjeon campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, used for the leads’ university-era flashbacks. Other venues that fans have placed include The-Link Hotel in Guro-gu, Seoul and Raum Art Center in Gangnam for the wedding and party scenes, plus a spot in Paju, Gyeonggi Province for a quieter turning-point moment between the two. Again, these are fan-compiled, not officially confirmed, so go in with that asterisk.

Worth your time?

If you want a romance with actual stakes, this is an easy recommendation. The non-verbal-wife premise could have been a cheap hook, but the show treats it as character rather than novelty, and the thriller plotting keeps the melodrama honest. Come for the kidnapping mystery, stay for two people learning to talk to each other under the worst possible circumstances. If it lands for you, the slow-burn-with-a-secret pairing of Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin is the reason.
